A full learning management system that trains the next generation of genetic genealogy volunteers, with billing and certification.
The problem
A volunteer organisation's capacity is capped by how many people know how to do the work. DNAngels' expertise lived in the heads of experienced researchers and was passed on ad hoc. Turning that into a course meant building an actual LMS — video, graded exercises, progress tracking, payment and credentials — not stitching together a course plugin.
The approach
The constraint was never the video, it was the record. A volunteer organisation's capacity is capped by how many people can do the work to a standard, so completion has to mean competence rather than watched-to-the-end. Exercises are built against realistic problems, progress is tracked per lesson and tied to a person rather than a browser, and Stripe billing means the programme funds the organisation running it instead of competing with it for grant money.
